Name of the project : PICS – Integrated immediate forecasting of the impacts of flash floods

Type of project : Research projects

Type of contract : ANR

Summary:

Forecasting short-term flash floods (0-6 hours) is essential for crisis/disaster managers in order to cope with their devastating effects. To better meet this need, the PICS project is aiming to build and evaluate integrated chains for real-time forecasting of the impact of flash floods, so as to include the many small waterways concerned (basins of 1 to 500 km²). The goal is to appropriately pair different models (hydro-meteorological models, hydraulic models and impact models) to evaluate these various links in terms of uncertainty and complementarity, as well as the resulting chains’ capacity to meet the needs of end users. The project entails intensive exchanges between the various scientific (meteorologists, hydrologists, hydraulicians, economists and sociologists) and operational (civil security, insurers, infrastructure managers and users) actors involved through shared case studies.
