Name of the project : Improvement, extension and validation of a processing algorithm for signals from embedded accelerometers in the event of road accidents

Type of project : Internships

Summary:

By 2022, new vehicles must be equipped with an EDR (Event Data Recorder), a kind of crash black box. These EDRs will make it possible to record vehicle data several seconds before an impact (speed, acceleration, steering wheel angle, etc.). The goal of the iSafe-Virtual Human project, which will host the internship, is to use this data to provide rescue teams with a virtual injury assessment for road accident victims in order to optimize care for them. An initial study allowed us to determine optimal installation of the accelerometers within the vehicle in order to best estimate the impact of deceleration on its occupants during a crash. A first processing algorithm to apply to the signals from these accelerometers was developed using data from accident reconstructions based on the finite element method, and not physical accelerometers. Validation based on real signals – the internship’s main objective – is therefore necessary. This work will be based on data already recorded by devices installed in vehicles:

  1. In “normal” driving conditions;
  2. In the event of significant dynamic stress on the vehicle as the result of an emergency maneuver (hard braking, swerving, etc.);
  3. In the event of a slight impact at low speed (5km/h);
  4. Subject to a crash test.

The initial algorithm so far has only been tested in the case of a side impact against a tree. Future testing will therefore involve extending its applicability to other types of impact (frontal, oblique, lateral with another vehicle, etc.).

The algorithm has, however, shown its limits as far as high speed accidents are concerned. Improvements are therefore necessary in order to broaden its range of applicability. The end goal of the internship will be to provide a validated analysis method for estimating deceleration as experienced by occupants in the event of a road accident based on data from the EDRs.
